This state-of-the-art renovation of 8,000 SF on UNT’s Discovery Park Campus main first floor seeks to create a maker space style collaborative work environment for the Mechanical Engineering (ME) department. The renovated space (originally a non-air-conditioned warehouse space) is now used by ME faculty to teach manufacturing processes and be utilized by project teams for Senior Capstone Design Projects. Renovation areas included the AR/VR Lab, the CoLab study/collaboration room, the Spark Lab, computer lab, large maker space, lounge, and lobby. Not only is the facility intended for teaching and research undertaken at the college level, but also as an exciting space for outreach to high school and other STEM students.
Significant retrofit modifications include the following:
• Develop a large shared workspace for: AR/VR support for 3D modeling, simulation and
design; Stratasys bench-scale 3D printing and additive manufacturing; lab-scale 5-axis
CNC machine; and, a shop-floor environment for collaborative robots used for
manufacturing and facilities testing.
• Technology-rich environment includes powered cord reels at all work stations for flexibility.
• Multiple seating and work areas are defined by varied furniture.
• Enhanced branding and wayfinding throughout to strengthen the facility connection to the
UNT campus, most notably at the floors and feature wall.
• Expanded security and connectivity access.
