This major renovation of the 1993 African American Museum, a significant cultural institution housing one of the most extensive collections of African American Folk Art in the United States, included work inside and out. State-of-the-art mechanical HVAC systems were put in place throughout all galleries, and enhanced lighting was introduced in the rotunda, lobby, and galleries. The interior design features encompassed bold floor finishes, improved auditorium seating, and water-efficient plumbing systems. Universal access was enabled with handrailing and other accessibility improvements.
Enhancements including a reimagined sculpture garden courtyard, bronze building signage, decorative fencing finishes, waterproofing upgrades, improved security systems, and integrated light bollards collectively transform the outdoor visitor experience.
These comprehensive updates reflect the City of Dallas’s commitment to preserving and celebrating African American culture and history. The newly renovated museum is now better equipped to serve the community, providing an enriched environment for education, inspiration, and reflection.
